WomenCare Birth Place at Riley Hospital

The WomanCare Birth Place at Riley Hospital would like to share your joy and help you prepare for the physical, emotional and social changes that the coming months bring.

Our progressive program of family-centered maternity care is based on the philosophy that the birth of a child is a joyous event in the life of a family. That's why at the WomanCare  Birth Place, we promote the health, safety and welfare of the entire family - baby, mother, father, everyone. This is evident in our home-like facilities, our specially trained staff and our modern technology.

At the Birth Place, you are in control and you always have a choice. You choose the method of delivery, the use of anesthesia and the people you want with you during the birth of your baby. Care is individualized, and your needs are our priority. You may set your own visiting hours to make the most of your rest time.

From the Moment You Arrive ...

You have all the comforts of home ... with the added safety of a hospital. You don't have to go through the Emergency Room. You go directly to the Birth Place for evaluation and admission. In creating the WomanCare Birth Place, Riley Hospital has captured traditional home-style comfort, while still providing for the well being of both mother and baby.

At the Birth Place, normal deliveries are performed in one of our birthing rooms designed for all stages of childbirth. Caesarean sections are performed in our fully equipped Operating Room located right in the Birth Place.

The birthing rooms are thoughtfully planned to make you feel at ease - a place where your baby can enter the world in a relaxed setting and in the company of those who will love them the most. And what a room it is ... more like a Bed & Breakfast than a hospital room. Beautiful! Spacious enough for your family to stay together in privacy. Among the special amenities for your comfort and convenience are a make-up vanity, hairdryer, refrigerator, microwave, a television and VCR and comfortable sleeping arrangements for Dad.

Once Your Baby Arrives ...

A new mother should be with her baby as much as she wants because mothers and babies benefit from being together in the first hours and days of life. Both you and your baby share the same nurse for one-on-one nursing care and support. The nurse will provide for your needs, and you have the opportunity to ask questions during this time. It is a special time of learning how to care for your new baby. However, a nursery is available should you desire quiet time.

The Birth Place Makes Things Easier ...

The staff of the Birth Place has a strong commitment to provide expectant mothers, fathers, siblings and grandparents with the education and support you need to welcome your new baby into your family. Some of the services we provide are:

  • Tours of the Birth Place

  • Childbirth Classes - Recommended at the beginning of the seventh month of pregnancy, the Birth Place Childbirth Classes meet for four consecutive weeks on Monday nights. Classes teach parents when to come to the hospital; what to expect once they arrive; the four stages of labor; Lamaze patterns of breathing and relaxation; and anesthesia and pain relief options. Also discussed are special situations, such as induced labor, forceps and Cesarean-section deliveries. Topics include caring for a newborn, as well as physical and emotional changes the mother can expect. Call (601) 692-2144 to register or for more information.

  • Breastfeeding Classes - The instructor discusses the advantages of breast feeding, as well as topics such as positioning, nutrition, and how to manage breast tenderness. The class meets for one night. Call (601) 692-2144 to register or for more information.

The class meets for one night. Call (601) 692-2144 to register or for more information.

  • Sibling Classes - Offered by appointment only, Sibling Classes help expectant sisters and brothers understand the changes that are about to occur in their family. They learn what a newborn looks and acts like and how they can help mom and dad care for the new baby. They learn how to help change diapers and feed the baby and get a quick tour of the Birth Place.
